Report: Twitter Now Charges $200,000 For Promoted Trends

Twitter continues to up the price for one of its promising money-makers: promoted trends.

The social network now charges companies $200,000 a day to buy a Promoted Trend in the U.S., according to a report from AllThingsD. That's more than twice the $80,000 that Twitter charged when it first introduced promoted trends back in 2010.
Companies who purchase a promoted trend get a customized hashtag placed at the top of the list of trending topics. Users who click on this hashtag see a tweet from that company at the top of the page of results. Big brands like Coke, Disney and Hyundai have purchased promoted trends over the years and so did both the Obama and Romney campaigns during the 2012 presidential election.
The Promoted Trend option is part of a suite of "promoted" advertising products that Twitter offers — others include promoted tweets and promoted accounts — and its proven to be an effective marketing tool. In the past, Twitter has revealed that promoted trends and promoted trends have much higher engagement than banner ads.
If Twitter can command the $200,000 price tag on a daily basis, it could generate more than $70 million annually from promoted trends in the U.S. alone. Of course, that assumes Twitter can fill the slot every day, which isn't the case at the moment.
