Online retailer ASOS has dominated the social media league tables for fashion brands this year, according to a recent study by eDigitalResearch.
Despite high-street retailer Topshop's continued dominance on Facebook, ASOS has experienced the most growth in social media activity this year. It added almost half a million fans to its Facebook account in just six months, and now has more than 1.4 million.
ASOS, which was the first retailer to introduce a Facebook store earlier this year, has attracted more than a quarter of a million Twitter followers since it started tweeting in 2008.
The Internet retailer still lags behind Topshop on Facebook by more than 300,000 fans, but has 200,000 more fans than next best New Look.
Other companies in the Facebook top ten include River Island, Claire's Accessories, Next, Net-A-Porter, La Senza, Tesco and Marks & Spencer, which has just fewer than half a million fans.
John Lewis has experienced the biggest jump in the retail league this year, rising 11 places since June to 15th. But ASOS is the only retailer in the top five to grow its existing fan base by 56 per cent in just six months.
Topshop takes second place to ASOS in the top ten most popular on Twitter, followed by Net-A-Porter, Harrods and Selfridges in third, fourth and fifth place respectively. Also in the top ten are Marks & Spencer, Amazon.co.uk, River Island, New Look and Waterstone's.
Cath Kidston, which has more than 26,900 followers on Twitter, has made the biggest jump up the Twitter table, moving up seven places to 14th position and into the top 20 for the first time.
In general, the research finds that retailers have a bigger presence and a more engaged following on Facebook than on Twitter.
Derek Eccleston, head of research at eDigitalResearch, said: '2011 has been a huge year for social media. Our benchmark shows that a staggering 2.6 million new followers have joined the top 20 Facebook pages in just the last six months, whilst an additional 400,000 Twitter users are now actively following top retail accounts.'
