According to Ad Age Facebook are about to launch an interesting new location based service added into their popular social network.
This could happen as quickly as within the next month - but what does this actually mean?
Well, lets look at the developments at Facebook over the last couple of weeks alone. By adding the 'like' button to 1000's of other websites around the world, Facebook are now able to do something that nobody else in the world can (not even google). They can now see what peoples preferences are within web pages.
Sure, Google has often been called 'big brother' for being able to see the pages you search, how you find what you're looking for and when, but now Facebook can see much more into the detail as to what your personal preferences are within websites.
How will local change this? Well the question is more about what Facebook can do to maximise location based services. Think about exsisting services such as yelp, qype and foursquare, and how Facebook can do this almost instantly once this service goes live.
Being able to 'like' local businesses is just the start - a complete user review system and being able to 'check in' to location based landmarks, review, share, update and generate whatever you like - could this overtake the other leaders in this field overnight? Should we be worried? Perhaps...but the future of Facebook is definitely evolving.
