Social networking via apps sees 126 per cent growth


72.2m Americans can't resist the lure of status swapping.
Digital analyst comScore has produced the report observing the mobile social media trend in the US.
Results found that 72.2 million users accessed social networks and blogs via mobile across a three month period ending in August 2011, a 37 per cent growth on the same time last year.
More than half of the US mobile users at 40 million visit social media daily, a growth of 58 per cent on August 2010, according to the report.
Mark Donovan, comScore senior vice president for mobile, said: "This behavior is even more prevalent among smartphone owners with three in five accessing social media each month, highlighting the importance of apps and the enhanced functionality of smartphones to social media usage on mobile devices."
The firm claims access to social networks via apps has seen a 126 per cent growth up to 38.5 million users, while mobile browser use grew by 24 per cent to 42.3 million.

Facebook still dominates the social networking scene with an average audience of 57.3 million users. Twitter was second with 13.4 million but received a 75 per cent increase.


Further results show that their is a big opportunity for advertisers and brands to utilise the sites. 52.9 per cent of mobile social networkers were likely to read posts from brands and events, while one in four clicked on an ad.
Donovan, said: "Advertisers and marketers should take note, mobile users are not only engaging with their friends through social networking, but a majority are also interacting with brands in these social media environments."
