Top 5 Mobile Commerce Trends 2010

Considering that most people would rather lose their walletthan misplace their cell phone, it’s fitting that the mobile world is quickly becoming a new hub for business. For many of us, our cell phone never leaves our side. It holds a place at the dinner table, is easily accessible in your bag’s front pocket, and often, somehow it even manages to end up sharing your pillow at night. Busy schedules mean people are often on the move and when marketers and companies can’t reach consumers at their computers, on TV, before the previews at the movies, with billboards, or magazine and newspaper ads, they must feel assured that they can still reach them on their cell phones.
Mobile commerce, or m-commerce, is simply the ability to conduct business transactions through a mobile device. With smartphone sales rising 49% in the first quarter of 2010, never before has it been so easy to shop, anywhere, anytime from the palm of your hand. There is an enormous amount of ongoing market research, and though there has been a variety of numbers estimated and reported, they all conclude that mobile commerce is a profitable and rapidly growing market.
By 2015, it’s estimated that shoppers from around the world will spend about $119 billion on goods and services bought via their mobile phones, according to a study by ABI Research released this past February. In the United States alone, mobile shopping rose from $396 million in 2008 to $1.2 billion in 2009, and mobile campaign spending also increased by 25 to 30% over the past year, with companies shelling out just under $313 million according to the same study. Senior Analyst Mark Beccue, said that he’s forecasting U.S. sales to reach about $2.2 billion in 2010.
Here are five mobile commerce trends to keep an eye on for the remainder of 2010.

1. Bargain Hunting

It would seem that mobile purchasing often lends itself to an impulse buy. Maybe you just have to suddenly download that song from the iTunes Store or really want to make sure you have tickets to that hot concert. In this case, it’s the savvy shopper that has taken note of mobile commerce. Beccue said that in the fourth quarter of 2009, he started to notice something unexpected and a bit “weird.”
Bargain hunting has become extremely popular with apps like RedLaser that allow users to scan product bar codes and discover it’s various prices at different retailers. Shoppers are melding the two worlds of online/mobile shopping with actual physical shopping to make sure they get the best prices.

2. Mobile Ticketing

“Do you have the tickets?” We’ve all been asked or have asked that question always expecting an affirmative answer, but despite our positive thinking someone often forgets the tickets. But that could very well be a conversation and frustration of the past given that mobile ticketing transactions are expected to exceed $100 billion world wide by 2012, according to a study released this month by Juniper Research. No doubt, the convenience of mobile ticketing, where customers can order, pay for, and validate tickets anywhere or anytime from their cell phones, is a driving force in its popularity.
Websites like Fandango and MovieTickets.com have made snagging seats to the hottest movie of the moment that much easier (or more competitive) with their mobile ticketing apps. This past weekend,Inception, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, was sold out all weekend, but mobile ticketing likely helped movie goers nab those last few seats. And industry sources say that mobile ticketing can account for up to 10% of ticket sales for blockbusters like Avatar on opening weekend. “It’s a small but growing percent of overall ticket sales,” said Harry Medved, director of marketing at Fandango.

3. Banking

We’ve been getting used to mobile banking for a while now. Most of us have our accounts setup online and check our balances on the phone. But according to data released by comScore, 13.2 million people accessed their bank accounts from their phones during the month of April alone, which is a 70% increase from a year ago. And similarly, the number of people using mobile banking apps more than doubled, to about 5 million in the last year.

4. Tangible Goods

So what are people actually buying with their phones? According to a survey by the Mobile Marketing Association, 17% of mobile commerce was used for purchasing applications and ringtones, while another 6% of people used their phones for discounts and coupons, and another 6% used their phones to buy tangible goods — that is, actual goods that you can put in your hands.
According to Beccue, eBay has been the standout leader in mobile commerce with their iPhone app that launched in 2008, and their Blackberry and Android applications that launched in 2009 and 2010. In 2009, the company saw more than $600 million dollars in goods sold via the mobile app, which was a 200% increase from 2008. The launch of their app notified bidders with push alerts and SMS notifications when they had been outbid, and allowed them to cast another attempt or keep track of ending auctions. According to eBay, one item is purchased every two seconds using eBay mobile app, with apparel, auto parts, cell phones/accessories, sporting goods and collectibles ranking as the top five categories of purchased items.

5. Marketing

Mobile commerce is growing and it is directly related to the amount of mobile marketing that companies are investing in. A reported 74% of online retailers either have in place or are developing mobile commerce strategies, while 20% have already implemented their complete plans, according to a study by the National Retail Federation.
Text message marketing, where customers opt-in to receive news about deals or offer coupons, has been a widely adopted practice as it’s a direct way to engage with consumers that has a high likelihood of being read. Retailers are also investing more time and money into creative ways to reach consumers via their mobile phones with campaigns that enhance the brand identity or the shopping experience.
eBay’s recent launch of their Fashion App is a great example. The app allows users to browse for clothes, have access to exclusive sales, and “try on” an outfit by snapping a picture with the iPhone’s camera. It then let’s you share your outfits with friends on Facebook and Twitter. All of the features really add to the shopping experience, but most importantly, consumers are able to buy and bid on what they like.

“Pet Society” Sells 90 Million Virtual Goods Per Day

If you weren’t convinced that social gaming and virtual goods are big business, here’s a stat for you: EA’s Pet Society sells 90 million virtual goods per day.
Sebastien de Galleux, co-founder of Playfish and now the VP of business development and strategic partnerships for EA Interactive, shared several stats about EA’s social games at the LeWeb Conference in Paris. In his interview with Tekzilla’s Veronica Belmont, Galleux, the social gaming pioneer revealed that its most popular game, Pet Society, has 20 million users, nearly double that of World of Warcraft.
Late last year, EA acquired Playfish for up to $400 million in order to gain ground in the rapidly-growing social gaming space.
The crowd was stunned though to hear that Pet Society sells 90 million virtual goods per day, though. While many are items that cost cents rather than dollars, it still adds up to 32.85 billion virtual goods sold per year. Galleux noted that it sells more goods in its marketplace than even eBay and that its users are demanding moer ways, not less, ways to pay for virtual goods in bulk.
Pet Society isn’t EA/Playfish’s hot social game, either: Galleux revealed that FIFA Superstars is now the top sports game on Facebook.

Silver Surfers Driving Web Growth

Elderly living alone use internet to keep in touch with family
Just 11 per cent of one person households over state pensionable age had internet access at home in 2000. Now the figure stands at almost 40 per cent Photo: Bloomberg
Nearly half of the over-75s, however, reported difficulties in using computers and mobile phones, while a third of 65-74-year-olds said they too struggled with mobile technology.
The number of broadband connections in Britain grew by three per cent in the last year, but by nine per cent among 65-74-year-olds and eight per cent for over-75s. Nearly one in six, however, still say they do not intend to get web access in the next year. A fifth said the same in 2009.
UK Digital Champion Martha Lane Fox said: “The internet offers users a huge range of benefits for this age group – from keeping in touch with family and friends, to making savings online to even getting your shopping delivered to your door.” She urged younger people to help older friends and relatives to get online.
Helena Herklots, Services Director at Age UK, added that “digital inclusion has a key role to play in battling social exclusion.”
Ofcom’s report shows that the generational divide in attitudes to technology is also narrowing rapidly. More than half of all 65-74-year olds now have a computer at home for instance, as do 29 per cent of those over 75. Older people, however, are still less likely to switch mobile phone network or use the internet on a mobile phone.
Although 40 million Britons have used the internet, a further 9 million have never used it. These tend to be disproportionately the elderly or socially deprived. Lane Fox’s government-backed organisation to promote internet use, Race Online 2012, Microsoft and a number of other bodies have launched a campaign for Christmas that aims to get more users onto the web by providing refurbished computers and training courses.
Ofcom’s report also found that 73 per cent of people now have broadband at home, compared to 45 per cent in 2006. Nearly one in five, however, were dissatisfied with the speed they received, compared to the advertised speed for which they were paying. Last week, Ofcom released a report which found that Britain’s infrastructure for high-speed broadband, both through fixed line and mobile phones, lagged behind other European countries, although it said plans for the future should make up the deficit.

The ROI Of Social Business 2 Business

FOUND the ROI of Social Media for B2B Marketers!

I think it is fair to say that Social Media has hit the mainstream these days but the big concern on every B2B Marketers mind has been where is the ROI? As a result I hear of many Social “science experiments” going on across several organizations that may or may not yield the results the marketer is hoping for. But I believe there is one place that delivers a strong ROI in Social Media and if you follow my advice not only will you conquer social media but you will delight your customers in the process!
Most of the time when I am talking with other B2B marketers they seem to be taking classic approach to social media and treating it like just another media channel posting press releases, sharing events, posting videos and expecting to see instant results like they get with other online media like banners, text links and search. There is no wonder why they find it hard to find a strong ROI with that approach.
Others are looking for a tool to do the work for them and I would argue that they shouldn’t be focused on finding the right tool, they should be focused on finding the right approach!
Enter Social Customer Support …
Social customer support I would argue is the single best place to focus your social media efforts since it can reduce customer churn and increase retention rates faster than any other program I have ever seen before. Listening for and spotting a customer issue, responding to them and solving their problem in minutes using social media provides what can only be called an “exceptional customer experience”.
Don’t take my word for it, a recent Forrester study showed that customers actually prefer a better customer experience compared to everyday low prices and that they would actually be willing to pay an average of 10% more to a company that provided a superior customer experience. Moreover, great customer experiences drive positive word of mouth (WOM) which capitalizes on the viral nature of Social Media. And finally companies that provide great customer experiences have customers that defect less and are more profitable to them in the long term. So why wouldn’t you center you social media efforts on providing outstanding customer support?
Not everyone enjoys calling into a contact center and more and more as social media evolves it provides a choice to your customers on how to interact with you. Going forward they will expect to get support using the channel that they prefer and feel most comfortable using and in many cases that is going to be social!
The downside of poor customer service has been well documented on the web more and more people are taking to the web to warn other would be customers of their dissatisfaction so don’t let that be your company! I never read a Social Media case study that started with “we completely ignored this customers issue they were blogging or tweeting about and everything worked out great” in fact it is always the opposite.
Supporting and retaining your best customers is always a good strategy especially when in B2B where a few customers account for a large part of your revenue. Keeping them happy and engaged with you is easy to do with social media and it turns out that it is the best place to find an ROI as well.

Make Thanksgiving A Social Experience!

On the fourth Thursday of every November, Americans engage in an annual feast that reminds us of our country’s humble origins, and give us a good reason to get together with family, watch football and stuff our faces until our pants don’t fit. It’s the official start to the holiday season, and it can either be a fantastic day full of food, family and fun, or a total nightmare full of burnt turkeys and busted travel plans.
Fortunately, you can always turn to the social web to help you plan for the big day. In fact, the InternetInternet can help you prepare a feast, assist you with your T-day travel and keep you entertained once the pie is gone and the plates are cleared. And that’s definitely something to be thankful for.

Cooking the Perfect Feast

There are plenty of ways to use the web to put together the perfect Thanksgiving dinner by yourself.  With aholiday menu planner that helps you balance all your guests’ distinct dietary needs and the Food Network’s comprehensive Thanksgiving 2010 guide, the web will have you well-equipped to whip up a fabulous feast in no time. And it can even help you handle the tough stuff, like picking the perfect Thanksgiving station on Pandora, feeding your vegetarian guests and decorating your house for the holiday.
Sometimes, you don’t want the entire weight of the meal to fall on your shoulders alone — especially when that meal includes a 20-pound turkey. Fortunately, the web can help you out with that too. If you decide you want your dinner to be a potluck, you can use SignUpGenius or GroupSched to create interactive online sign-up sheets so your guests know what they should bring.
Evite also has a wide selection of potluck-specific invites, and there’s even an entire site devoted to helping you put together the perfect potluck party.
You can also supplement a few home-cooked dishes with help from your local Whole Foods or send someone a helping hand with a meal via Send A Meal’s Thanksgiving specials, both of which have online ordering and home delivery. Vons and Boston Market both offer full Thanksgiving meal options for your perusal online.
Regardless of how you slice it, cook it or get your friends to pitch in, there are plenty of ways the web can help you save money on your Thanksgiving meal, from budget meal plans, to Thanksgiving grocery coupons, to the growing industry of mobile coupon apps that let you take advantage of Thanksgiving specials from store to store via your smartphone. One man has even decided to blog about using coupons to cook an entire Thanksgiving meal for six people on a $5 budget. Then again, if you decide you don’t want to cook at all, websites like GayotAbout.com and CitySearch can help you find restaurants serving the traditional T-day meal. Homemade food is sweet, but spending more time relaxing than basting a turkey might just be sweeter.

Taming the T-Day Travel

Of course, if you’re not celebrating Thanksgiving at your house, then your first priority might be getting those T-day travel plans in order. There are plenty of ways the web can help you save on fall travel in general, from websites that help you find cheap airfare to the GasBuddy app for iPhone and Android, which helps you locate the cheapest place to fill up on that long trip over the river and through the woods.
BeatTheTraffic is another great online travel resource that tells you what the congestion looks like on your local travel routes, and there’s a companion app that will give you updated traffic info on the go. Similarly, the Airport Flight Delays app will let you know in advance when to expect a delay so you can plan accordingly. And, in case you need to make a last-minute travel adjustment, HopStop will help you out with online public transit directions for many cities, which you can also access on the go via an iPhone app or by using its SMS feature.
No matter how you travel, don’t forget to bring your host or hostess a gift. Etsy has some fantastic handmadeholiday-themed options, including everything from embroidered turkey toilet paper to sweet centerpieces. And of course, nothing says “Thanks for having me for Thanksgiving” quite like the gift of a membership to the Pie of the Month Club, which buys your generous host all sorts of pie-related goodies, plus the monthly delivery of a fresh pie recipe, so he or she can start practicing for the dessert portion of next year’s feast.

When You Can’t Eat Another Bite

There’s always the question of what to do when dinner is over. Sure, there’s football on TV and pants that need unbuttoning, but what else?
A simple Google search proves that the web is full of Thanksgiving craft ideas, but there are plenty of other activities to keep you occupied if you’re not the crafting type. Thanksgiving is a great opportunity to give back, and the web can help you find food drivessoup kitchens and more to volunteer at. You can also searchFacebook and Eventbrite event listings to find Thanksgiving meals and charity events looking for volunteers.
Another classic Thanksgiving activity is sharing the things you’re thankful for, and, of course, the web makes it easier to do that too. TurkeyTwitter actually aggregates all the tweets with Thanksgiving and thankfulness-themed hashtags, making it easy to browse the things people are thankful for and share them with your friends and family. Facebook also has a number of Thanksgiving apps to play with, and you can find some cool turkey-themed flash games to play online, including one deceptively difficult combo of turkeys and Tetris.
Get creative with your guests and play Thanksgiving-related trivia games by printing facts about turkeysT-Dayand even the Macy’s parade balloons and quizzing each other Jeopardy-style.
No matter what you do this Thanksgiving, don’t forget to give thanks for the world wide web. Because without it, planning for Thanksgiving would be a pretty thankless task indeed.

Top Twitter Trends This Week

If you think Twitter trends are all about tween pop sensations and low brow hashtagery, you’re — well, you’re mostly right. But not this week.
Twitter once again showed its international breadth and taste for breaking news with the top topic of conversation being the release of Myanmar dissident Aung San Suu Kyi from house arrest after what many reports claim has been nearly 15 of the last 20 years. Suu Kyi has opposed her country’s ruling military junta, and her steadfastness has earned her a Nobel Peace Prize, among other recognitions from the international community. Her release was discussed and celebrated around the world, earning the number one spot on the trends chart this week.
Other hot topics included the announcement of a royal wedding in the UK, and some contentious bouts in the world of boxing, a sport that rarely hits the trending charts on Twitter, but came in at number three this week.
Curious about the rest of the week’s top Twitter topics? Check out the full list below, aggregated by our friends over at What The Trend. Because this is a topical list, hashtag memes and games have been omitted from the chart.
