Social media restrictions for the London 2012 Olympic Games Maker volunteers have been announced, with volunteers told not to post updates writing about or showing images of backstage VIPs.
The rules, which are on the Games Maker section of the LOCOG website, warn the volunteers not to disclose their location, breaking news about any athlete, or any information about visiting VIPs.
One volunteer has, according to the BBC, said on Facebook that the guidelines mean the Games Makers are not allowed to appear in their local paper about their role or visit a school without the permission of the ‘powers that be’.
The volunteers have also been told not to get involved in detailed discussion online about the Olympic Games, and not to post a picture or video of LOCOG areas which are closed to the public. The site suggest that information posted on social media networks which fall under these guidelines could damage the Games in terms of reputation, safety and security.
