Twitter Rant Costs £1,000 Per Word!

Tut, tut, tut, not another football player landing themselves in hot water after taking to social networking site Twitter. Ranting over other players, referees and so on, have at times resulted in some football players having to pay off a huge fine with the possibility of being banned from using the site completely.
The latest to follow those such as Jose EnriqueCarlton Cole and Ryan Babel is that of Nottingham Forest player, striker Ishmael Miller. Although the player has just managed to escape a £21,000 fine after ranting over Forest’s 1-0 defeat at the weekend, manager for the side Steve Cotterill is hitting back at his players.
According to mirrorfootball.co.uk, any player found to be using social networking sites of any kind including Twitter and leaving messages that are aimed at the club or fans, will automatically be fined £1,000 a word.
At what would transpire to be the first meeting with his new side, the manager Cotterill laid the rules down from the start. Cotterill reacted by saying “I had a rule at Portsmouth, that anyone using Twitter or Facebook were not allowed to talk about the football club, their team-mates or the supporters. Otherwise they got fined £1,000 a word.”
This followed on by the manager saying, “I don’t want any players or staff Facebooking or Twittering about the club or they will be fined that’s for sure. They can Twitter about anything else, talk about their cars or anything else they want to do – but not about the club.”
What are your thoughts on this? Is the new ruling a little excessive or has Steve Cotterill got it right?
